What the 34 Checks Cover

Market and strategy

Choosing countries from real data and giving each market a goal and a budget.

Keyword research

Researching each country separately, including local spelling and search intent.

Site structure

Country domains, subfolders or subdomains, separate URLs for each version, and no forced IP redirects.

Hreflang

Self-references, return links, valid codes such as en-GB, x-default and matching canonicals.

Content and localization

Local currency, units, examples and reviewers, not copied pages with only the country name changed.

Technical setup

Speed in each market, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and schema showing where you work.

Authority and measurement

Links from each country, and rankings, leads and AI visibility tracked by market.

The 5 Most Common International SEO Mistakes

Avoid these mistakes that can hurt your rankings.

  1. Translating instead of researching. People in each country search with different words, so a translated keyword list misses real demand.
  2. Broken hreflang. Missing return links or invalid codes (such as en-UK instead of en-GB) can mean Google ignores the tags.
  3. Redirecting visitors by IP. Search engines and visitors may never see your other country versions.
  4. Near-duplicate country pages. Pages that only swap the country name give Google little reason to rank them.
  5. Measuring one global ranking. Positions differ by country, so track and report each market separately.

International SEO and AI Search

Google says the same SEO basics apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, so the checks above still decide which country version Google can show. Clear country pages, correct hreflang and local content also make it easier for AI assistants to understand which page serves which market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an international SEO checklist?

It’s a list of the checks a website needs before it can rank in more than one country or language. These include country keyword research, the right URL structure, correct hreflang tags, localized content and tracking results by market.

Do I need hreflang if all my sites are in English?

Yes, if you have separate pages for different English-speaking countries, such as the UK, the US and Australia. Hreflang tags like en-GB, en-US and en-AU help Google show the right version in each country.

Should I use country domains, subfolders or subdomains?

All three can work. Subfolders (such as /au/ and /uk/) keep everything on one domain, so they’re often the simplest choice for a growing business. Country domains send a strong local signal but need separate authority building. Whichever you choose, use it consistently.

Is translating my website enough for international SEO?

No. Translation changes the words, but each market also needs its own keyword research, local examples and pricing, and links from sites in that country.

How long does international SEO take to show results?

It depends on the market, the competition and your site’s current authority. Technical fixes such as hreflang can show up within weeks. Rankings in a new country usually take several months.

Does international SEO still matter with AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

Yes. Google says its AI features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, rely on the same SEO foundations as normal search. Google still needs to find and understand each country version of your site to show the right one. Other AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, don’t publish how they choose between country pages. So clear, separate pages for each market, with correct hreflang and local content, remain the safest approach.
