Offshore SEO Australia can work well for Australian businesses when the provider delivers proven local results, protects your accounts and data, and avoids risky shortcuts such as bought links. A cheap offshore package can cost more to fix than it saves if these basics are missing.
I should be transparent about my perspective. I’m an SEO consultant based in Kathmandu, Nepal, working with Australian clients, so I provide offshore SEO services. That’s why I’ll also explain when you shouldn’t go offshore.
This guide covers what offshore SEO involves, shared office hours across Australian cities, essential privacy rules, red flags to watch for, and what quality offshore SEO looks like.
What is offshore SEO?
Offshore SEO means the work on your website’s search rankings is done by a person or team outside Australia, often in Nepal, India, the Philippines or Pakistan. It usually comes in one of three forms:
| Model | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
| White-label through an Australian agency | You hire a local agency. It passes the work to an offshore team. | Businesses that want a local contact and contract | You may not know who does the work. Agencies may charge local rates for offshore work. |
| Direct consultant | You work with one offshore specialist directly. | Small and mid-sized businesses that want senior attention | Check that they can handle your volume and have cover when they’re away. |
| Offshore agency or team | You hire a whole offshore team for strategy, content and links. | Larger sites with a lot of ongoing work | Quality can vary between team members. Ask who is on your account. |
When offshore SEO works, and when it doesn’t
It usually works when:
- You have someone in-house (even part-time) who can review the work and approve content.
- The provider has worked on Australian sites before and can show you the Search Console data.
- The scope is clear: which pages, which keywords, which reports and by when.
Stay onshore when:
- You need someone at your office or at weekly face-to-face meetings.
- Your industry is heavily regulated (health, financial advice, legal) and every page needs local legal review. Offshore can still help with technical work, but the content should be written or reviewed locally.
- Your main market is one suburb or city and depends on local relationships, events and press. A local agency will know the media and the community better.
Time zones: how many working hours you actually share
Nepal is UTC+5:45. Most of Australia is 4–5 hours ahead, and Perth only 2¼ hours ahead. Daylight saving in New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia started on 4 October 2026 and moves the gap by an hour until April. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t change their clocks.

| City | Ahead of Kathmandu (Oct–Apr) | Ahead of Kathmandu (Apr–Oct) | Shared office hours (Oct–Apr / Apr–Oct) |
| Perth | 2 h 15 min | 2 h 15 min | 5 h 45 min / 5 h 45 min |
| Darwin | 3 h 45 min | 3 h 45 min | 4 h 15 min / 4 h 15 min |
| Brisbane | 4 h 15 min | 4 h 15 min | 3 h 45 min / 3 h 45 min |
| Adelaide | 4 h 45 min | 3 h 45 min | 3 h 15 min / 4 h 15 min |
| Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart | 5 h 15 min | 4 h 15 min | 2 h 45 min / 3 h 45 min |
Shared hours = 9am–5pm in Australia and 9am–6pm in Kathmandu.
In practice, a 9am call in Kathmandu is 2:15pm in Sydney in summer. That leaves the Sydney afternoon for calls and questions, and the Kathmandu afternoon runs while Sydney is closed. You send feedback before you log off and wake up to the changes.
The risk is slow back-and-forth. If each question waits a day for an answer, one round of edits can take a week. Agree on one weekly call and a shared task list, and ask questions in writing so they can be answered overnight.
Five things offshore providers get wrong about Australia
- Australian English. Australians write “optimise”, “colour” and “organisation”, and search for “solicitor”, “tradie”, “postcode” and “GST”. Pages written in US English look foreign to Australian buyers, even when Google ranks them.
- In September 2026, Bing had 9.17% of searches in Australia, against 87.9% for Google (StatCounter). That’s a large share to ignore. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.
- .com.au rules. A .com.au domain needs an Australian presence, usually an ABN or ACN, or an Australian registered trade mark, and the name must have a close and substantial connection to your business. If an overseas provider registers it in their own name, you may not be eligible to keep it. Register domains yourself.
- Local signals. Australian reviews, an Australian address in your Google Business Profile, local phone numbers and links from Australian sites (industry associations, local news, suppliers) carry weight that overseas links don’t.
- Seasons and dates. Christmas falls in summer, the financial year ends on 30 June, and EOFY sales, school holidays and state public holidays differ by state. Content calendars copied from a US template get the timing wrong.
Privacy: what Australian businesses are responsible for
Under Australian Privacy Principle 8, a business covered by the Privacy Act that sends personal information overseas must take reasonable steps to make sure the overseas recipient doesn’t breach the privacy principles. It can still be held accountable if the recipient does.
Most SEO work doesn’t need personal information. To keep it that way:
- Give your provider access to Search Console and GA4, which report on traffic, not on people. Don’t send CRM exports or customer lists.
- If they need access to your website or CRM, write the privacy obligations into your contract and remove access when the work ends.
- Check with your adviser whether the Privacy Act applies to your business, because some small businesses are exempt.
Red flags in an offshore SEO proposal
- Guaranteed rankings (“Page 1 in 30 days”). Nobody controls Google’s results.
- Links by the hundred, or “DA 50+ backlinks” priced per link. Google’s spam policies cover link schemes, and penalty recovery is slow.
- No access to your own accounts. You should own Search Console, GA4, Google Business Profile and your domain. The provider gets user access, not ownership.
- Reports with no Search Console data, only a list of tasks done.
- No Australian examples. Ask for a project they’ve done for an Australian site, with the Search Console numbers.
- A price that can’t cover real work. Shout Digital, an Australian agency, argues that offshore packages at $500–$1,500 a month usually rely on shortcuts. Treat that as one agency’s view, but do ask what each hour of the package buys.

What good offshore SEO looks like: two Australian examples?
NAPS (higher education). As the SEO strategist for the National Academy of Professional Studies, I worked from Nepal on keyword research, content strategy and niche link building. Major technical changes weren’t possible during the campaign. Google organic clicks grew from 85.3K to 137K (+60.6%) in six months, with 105K impressions in Google’s AI features.
Ghothane Lawyers (Melbourne). My team in Nepal rebuilt the firm’s consultation booking flow, added two-factor login security, set up Rank Math and produced the firm’s social content. In Q3 2026, Search Console clicks rose from 4.23K to 4.32K and average position improved from 10.9 to 10.5, while Facebook views grew 329%.
In both projects the client owned every account, saw the same Search Console data I did, and had one person on their side approving the work. That matters more than where the provider is based.
A simple way to start
- Run an audit first. Ask for a paid or free audit of your site before agreeing to a monthly retainer. It shows you how they think and whether they understand Australian search. My free international SEO checklist → https://jagritilakher.com/resources/checklist/international-seo-checklist/ is a good way to check the basics yourself.
- Start with a 90-day scope. Agree on specific pages, keywords and reports.
- Measure in Search Console. Track clicks, impressions and the position of the pages you agreed on, not “rankings” from a tool you can’t check.
- Review at 90 days. Keep going, change scope or stop.
Frequently asked questions
Is offshore SEO safe for Australian businesses?
It can be, if the provider uses white-hat methods, you own all your accounts, and you don’t share customer data. The risk comes from cheap packages built on bought links and from losing control of your domain or Google accounts.
How much cheaper is offshore SEO?
Usually significantly cheaper than hiring an Australian agency or in-house specialist, because salaries and overheads are lower. But very low prices often mean shortcuts. Compare what each proposal includes (hours, pages, content, reporting) rather than the monthly price alone.
Can an offshore SEO consultant rank my site in Australia?
Yes. Google ranks pages on relevance and quality, not on where the person who optimised them lives. What matters is local knowledge: Australian keywords and spelling, local links and reviews, and Australian examples in your content.
What time can I talk to an SEO consultant in Nepal?
Nepal is 4–5 hours behind Sydney and Melbourne, and 2¼ hours behind Perth. Calls usually work best in the Australian afternoon, which is the Nepali morning.
Should I hire an agency or a freelancer offshore?
A single consultant gives you senior attention and direct contact, which suits most small and mid-sized businesses. A larger team suits sites that need a lot of content and link building every month. Either way, ask who will actually do the work.
